Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a condition characterised by high levels of glucose in the blood. This occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin, cannot effectively use the insulin it produces, or cannot produce insulin at all. Over time, consistently high blood glucose levels can cause damage to blood vessels and nerves, leading to serious long-term complications such as heart disease, kidney problems, vision impairment, and nerve damage, particularly in the feet.
There are several forms of diabetes however, the most common ones are type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
